Boo! Moscow Pride Parade Canceled!
Ugh! So unfortunate!
A gay pride parade has once again been denied in Moscow, Russia.
Organizers thought they would be granted a permit for the parade after homophobic mayor Yuri Luzhkov was fired in September, but sadly the new mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, has followed in his predecessor's footsteps.
Gay activists received a letter from city officials this past Tuesday, the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia, denying a permit in fear the event will spark "civil unrest"
Activist Nikolai Alekseyev commented on the letter, saying:
"I don't think it was premeditated, it's simply a coincidence, but this coincidence is nonetheless symbolic. As events are held around the world — including at an official level — to mark the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia, Russia pursues its caveman, primitive policy of bans."
Primitive is an understatement! How about oppressive?
However, equality can not be beaten with a permit though and Nikolai says he still plans on holding a pride event. Good luck over there! Hope it's a blast!
